Your credit report includes important information that most lenders use to determine if you are credit worthy. The report contains information from lenders that you have borrowed from in the past, including current balance, payment amount and history of your payments. There are three credit reporting agencies, and in some cases, they will not have the same information. It is important that you check to make sure that the information contained in your credit report is accurate.

The vast majority of discrepancies are corrected quickly and easily. In almost every case, however, you must initiate the correction. In many cases you can receive one free copy of your credit report a year from each of the agencies. In the event that you are denied a loan, you are entitled to receive a free copy of your credit report and an explanation as to why your loan was denied. Use the links provided below to visit the credit reporting bureaus on the internet.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has published two consumer brochures intended to help prevent consumers from being duped into paying for their supposedly "free" reports. Want a Free Annual Credit Report? The Only Official Website is annualcreditreport.com which warns consumers about imposter sites, while the Your Access to Free Credit Reports brochure educates consumers about their right to a free copy of their credit reports, and discusses other consumer rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the FACT Act. Both publications are available in English and Spanish at www.ftc.gov/freereports.

The consumer brochures are in response to complaints that the FTC has received from consumers who thought they were ordering their free annual credit report online, only to discover that their “free” report came at a price.

Consumers may now request their free annual report through a centralized source. Consumers can choose Internet, phone or mail to request their reports.
